Summary of Project:

These clients are an amazing family from Seattle with a highly creative elementary aged kid and their dog. They needed help getting settled in their new home in Durango while they prepared to move to our small town. Our task was to get the living room, family room, and entryway fully furnished before they arrived just before the school year began.

The architecture of their new home wasn’t exactly reflective of the style of this family. Our design needed to complement the mountain inspired space while also reflecting their contemporary aesthetic. It also needed to be a flexible gathering space for games and entertaining guests. Living with a dog and younger artist, durability was a must.

Before our firm begins the design project each client fills out our Design Questionnaire. This helps establish the direction of the design. Two questions that we refer to throughout the process are:

  1. What design styles do you want to see in your home?

  2. How do you want your space to feel?

For this project the design styles to incorporate were:

  • CONTEMPORARY - Curved, sculptural shapes with neutral colors and strong contrast.

  • ECLECTIC - Adding some color and texture and incorporating personal items from their global excursions.

  • SCANDINAVIAN MODERN - Simple and minimal shapes and colors.

The feeling list was: tranquil, casual, functional, flexible, inviting, and organic.

This project was so fun to create! We did almost everything virtually since the clients were still living in Seattle, which was a seamless process. Our biggest challenge was getting every last piece in time for it to be ready for their moving day. We were so thrilled that we had those rooms completely done for them when they first walked through the door!

The ability to make that happen was based on three things. First, strategically picking items that were going to come earlier than our deadline. Second, our clients being great at making quick (and still thoughtful!) decisions. Third, plain luck with delivery delays and minimal damage to items.

These clients are now settling into small town life and using those rooms almost exactly how we designed them which we love.
